Mattress and Futon Sizing Charts

Start Here

The quickest way to get the right size is to start with what you’re buying: a bed mattress (for a standard bed frame) or a futon mattress (made to fold on a futon frame). Futon mattresses are designed to flex when the frame converts, most standard bed mattresses aren’t.

Pick a bed size based on who’s sleeping on it, height, and how much room you want around the bed.

  • Twin / Twin XL: Best for kids, dorms, daybeds, and narrow rooms.
  • Full: Comfortable for one; tight for two long-term.
  • Queen: The most popular all-around size for couples.
  • King / California King: The most space for two (Cal King adds length).

Jump to Bed Mattress Sizes

Futon mattresses use familiar labels (Twin, Full, Queen), but they’re made to fold in a frame and can run slightly smaller than bed mattresses.

Most futon sofa frames are built for Full or Queen. Smaller, space-saving frames may use Twin or a frame-specific size.

  • Wide, opens flat: the classic futon sofa — usually Full or Queen.
  • Compact, opens out: saves wall space and extends with an ottoman or built-in footrest.
  • Tip: If you already own the frame, match its required mattress dimensions (not just the label).

Bed Mattress Sizes

Standard U.S. bed mattress sizes are listed below. If you’re matching an existing bed frame or foundation, always check product specifications — small sizing differences can occur between manufacturers.

Standard bed mattress size chart showing Twin, Twin XL, Full, Full XL, Queen, King, and California King

Size Dimensions Best use and notes
Twin 39" x 75" Kids’ rooms, daybeds, guest rooms, trundles, and tight spaces. Easy to move and fits almost anywhere.
Twin XL 39" x 80" Same width as Twin with extra length. Popular for dorms and narrow bedrooms.
Full
Double
54" x 75" Comfortable “step-up” for one sleeper and a popular guest room option. Works for two occasionally, but feels snug for everyday couple use.
Full XL 54" x 80" Extra length in a Full width. Less common, so sheet selection can be more limited.
Queen 60" x 80" The most popular bed size in the U.S. Great balance of comfort and space for couples and guest rooms.
King
Eastern King
76" x 80" Maximum width for couples who want more personal space. Great for sharing with kids or pets.
California King
Western King
72" x 84" Best when extra length matters most. Slightly narrower than a standard King, but longer.

Futon Mattress Sizes

Full and Queen are the most popular futon sizes. For the best fit, measure the inside width where the mattress sits (most important), and use the back deck width as a confirmation check. If your futon is a lounger or tri-fold style, confirm whether it relies on an ottoman or a built-in footrest.

Full and Queen futon size comparison diagram

In order to find out the correct size of the mattress you need, measure the back part of your frame.

Full Futon

Mattress size: 54" x 75"

Back deck width: 72" to 75"

  • Best everyday couch size for multipurpose rooms.
  • Often the easiest size to fit in apartments and guest rooms.
  • Comfort for two depends on thickness and firmness preference.

Queen Futon

Mattress size: 60" x 80"

Back deck width: 76" to 80"

  • Best everyday bed feel when the room supports it.
  • More sleeping room for two adults.
  • Confirm your frame is built for Queen sizing before ordering.

Compact space-saving frames may use Split or Chair size mattresses instead. These are made to match specific frame styles and, when paired with a matching ottoman/extension, create a complete sleeping surface.

Split and Chair futon sizes

A split futon uses two smaller mattresses side-by-side to form one larger sleep surface. It’s easier to move, rotate, and store than a one-piece mattress.

  • Chair: Made for chair-sized frames; typically paired with a matching ottoman to extend the sleep length.
  • Twin Split: Two pieces that combine into a Twin sleep surface.
  • Full Split or Loveseat: Two pieces that combine into a wider sleep surface for compact sofa sleepers.
  • Queen Split: Two pieces that combine into a Queen sleep surface; a good option when you want Queen sleeping space with easier handling.

Futon Frame Types

Futon frames generally fall into three styles: bi-fold (with optional ottoman), bi-fold lounger (with footrest), and tri-fold. The right style depends on your wall space, floor space, and how often you convert from sofa to bed.

Frame type Best for Space planning notes
Bi-fold
(optional ottoman)
Everyday sofa with an easy, classic conversion. Needs more wall width for Full/Queen frames. Bed length is the mattress length; add arm widths for total wall space.
Bi-fold Lounger
(with footrest)
Maximum sleep surface in minimal wall space. Great for smaller rooms. The extension is built in (footrest/ottoman section is stored inside the frame).
Tri-fold Compact wall footprint with a lounge-style setup. Often less wall width, but needs open floor space to pull out. Many styles use an ottoman/extension section.

Bi-fold frames have two main panels (seat + back). They’re a classic choice for everyday use and are usually easy to convert.

  • Optional ottoman: adds lounging comfort and can be used as a bench when stored separately.
  • Room planning: use mattress length (Full 75", Queen 80") and add arm widths to estimate needed wall width.

Bi-fold loungers (often called loveseats or space-savers) include a footrest/extension section that folds into the frame. They’re ideal when you want a bigger sleep surface than the wall width would normally allow.

As a simple rule of thumb:

  • A Full-size loveseat can fit a Full sleeping surface into about 60" of wall space.
  • A Twin-size loveseat can fit a Twin sleeping surface into about 45" of wall space.

Tri-fold frames are designed to take up less wall width, but they usually need open floor area to pull out into bed position.

Tri-fold A-Frame futon shown in seating, lounge, and bed positions

  • Wall space: often needs less wall width than a bi-fold of the same mattress size.
  • Floor space: plan for open floor length to pull out into bed position.
  • Extension: many tri-fold styles include an extension section as part of the setup.

In most bi-fold designs, to open into a bed, lift up the sitting deck and the frame will unfold flat. To return to couch position, lift the sitting deck first and then fold the back section into place. Tri-fold and lounger styles may include an extension/ottoman step as part of the conversion.

Some frames offer built-in storage such as sliding drawers under the seat deck or drop-leaf side panels that work as small tables. If you are space planning, check the product page to confirm included features and clearances.

Sizing FAQ

Mostly, yes. “Full” is typically listed as 54" x 75" in both categories. The difference is construction: a futon mattress is built to flex and fold with a frame, while most bed mattresses aren’t designed to bend. Futon mattresses may also measure slightly under the listed size depending on the build and cover.

Futon frames are sized by the mattress they’re built to hold (Full, Queen, etc.), not by the total outside width including arms. For the best fit, use the inside width where the mattress sits and the back deck width — not the arm-to-arm measurement.

Start with the inside width where the mattress sits. If it matches the Full or Queen ranges in our sizing chart, that’s your size. If it’s close, or your frame is an older/non-standard model, compare frame and mattress specs and contact us with your measurements before ordering.

Usually not. Futon frames need a mattress that can fold at the hinge points. A standard bed mattress may not bend correctly, can be damaged over time, and often won’t sit or feel right in sofa mode.

Measure the inside width between the arms where the mattress sits (most important). Then measure the back deck width as a confirmation check. If your frame uses an ottoman or a built-in footrest (lounger/tri-fold styles), confirm that setup too — it can change what “fits.”

A bi-fold is the classic futon that opens flat into a bed and usually uses Full or Queen futon sizing. A tri-fold opens out into the room and often requires a mattress made for that specific conversion style so it lays flat and folds properly.

Split sizes use two separate mattress pieces side-by-side to create one sleeping surface. They’re easier to move, store, and rotate, and they’re commonly used on compact frames designed to work with an ottoman/extension piece.

They can. Many futon mattresses are made slightly under the listed dimensions so they fit inside the frame and convert smoothly. The safest approach is to compare the mattress specs to your frame’s inside measurements.

Some designs store part of the sleeping surface in an ottoman or a built-in footrest extension. In sofa mode, that extension isn’t part of the seat depth, so the mattress can feel shorter until the frame is opened.

If possible, measure first. Older frames and different manufacturers can vary, and “Full” or “Queen” isn’t always perfectly consistent. Measuring the inside width where the mattress sits is the safest way to match.

Chair and loveseat frames often use smaller or split formats designed specifically for that frame style, sometimes with a matching ottoman to create a longer sleep surface. Match the frame’s required mattress dimensions rather than relying only on the label.

Snug, but not forced. Too tight can make folding harder and cause rubbing; too loose can shift and leave gaps. When in doubt, use the inside width as your deciding measurement and compare the frame and mattress specs — or send us your measurements before ordering.

Smooth delivery and comfy futon mattress
First time buying from Futonland so wasn’t sure what to expect. The delivery experience went very smoothly, I got several calls to set up and confirm delivery times. The futon mattress itself is very comfortable, no weird smells (bought the Wool Wrap Cotton And Double Foam 8 Inch Futon Mattress by Gold Bond). It’s tough to fold the mattress as a sofa though, you need two people. Overall a great online shopping experience

Excellent quality of the furniture
Pay extra for the assembly of the futon even though I found it to be expensive and still question the cost. The delivery was on time and the technicians did assemble the futon and dispose of the packaging. They did well to check final step of assembly for any missed steps or imperfections with the furniture.

Very happy with murphy bed and excellent delivery service
Our murphy bed arrived earlier than expected, in great shape and was not difficult to put together. The people who delivered it went above and beyond to help us and were very kind. We really appreciated their great service. The mattress seems comfortable and there is plenty of extra room for storing sheets and a comforter. Would definitely buy from Futonland again!

Very well done beginning to end
First I actually got to speak To a human. He knew the products and was able and willing to discuss my needs and wants and make recommendations. He also checked inventory to be sure the item was available rather than getting all the payment info hen sending an email saying - oops, it's backordered.
