What are the measurements of a futon cover? Is there a zipper?
Futon covers are designed to fit standard futon mattress sizes, which typically have a thickness of 6 to 8 inches.
However, if your futon mattress is thicker than 8 inches, you can also order a custom cover that will fit snugly. When it comes to putting on and taking off your futon cover, most covers come with a zipper that goes around two sides, allowing for easy removal and washing.
What is loft, piping, and inlay?
Loft
The loft is the height measurement of the futon cover, it matches the mattress thickness. Standard futon covers fit 6 to 8-inch thick futon mattresses but can be custom-made in a 9 or 10-inch loft.
Piping
The piping is the decorative binding around the cover pointing out its edges. Piping could be made of a different color to complement or contrast the main cover fabric.
Piping could be made in contrasting colors (blue cover with creme piping shown)
Inlay
The inlay is the bottom side of the futon cover. It can be made of a different fabric. Cover with optional inlay is typically one print on top with a coordinating solid fabric on the ‘flip side’. Usually, this option is used to reduce the cover price. Also, covers with inlay could be flipped if you were desperate to hide a stain before company arrives or even if you prefer the solid side for a change of pace.

How do I put on a snug futon cover without damaging the zipper?
A snug futon cover is meant to fit closely so the mattress looks neat and tailored once it is in place. Because the fit is tighter than a loose slipcover, the zipper should only be used to close the cover after the fabric has already been positioned properly. The most common cause of zipper damage is using the zipper to pull the cover over the mattress or forcing it closed when the fabric is uneven.
The easiest way to install a futon cover is to reduce tension from the start. Instead of laying the mattress flat on the floor, stand it upright against a wall or place it on its side. This makes it easier to guide the cover evenly and helps prevent too much strain on the zipper.
Start by turning the cover partially inside out and fitting one end of the mattress into the cover first. Then work the fabric over the mattress gradually, a little at a time, similar to putting on a fitted sheet. Use your hands to pull and smooth the fabric into place, especially around the corners. Before you touch the zipper, make sure the cover is sitting evenly and the seams are aligned.
Once the cover is in position, bring both sides of the zipper together and check that they are straight. Close the zipper slowly. If you feel resistance, stop and adjust the cover rather than pulling harder. A properly installed cover should zip with only light resistance, even when the fit is snug.
Best practices for installing a snug futon cover
| Step | What to do | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Position the mattress | Place it upright or on its side | Installing it flat on the floor |
| Fit the cover | Work the fabric on gradually | Trying to force the whole cover on at once |
| Align the fabric | Smooth corners and seams before zipping | Leaving one side bunched or twisted |
| Close the zipper | Zip slowly and gently | Using the zipper to pull the cover tight |
| If it feels tight | Stop and readjust | Forcing the zipper through resistance |
Tips for thicker futon mattresses
- Two people can make installation much easier.
- Compress the mattress slightly with your hands while adjusting the fabric.
- Zip a few inches at a time, then pause to smooth the cover before continuing.
If the zipper does not close smoothly, that usually means the cover needs to be repositioned. Taking a moment to adjust the fabric can help prevent damage and keep the cover looking its best.
